It has been suggested that even if you are running a real 64 bit processor, with the current state of program code and drivers, there is a good chance your system will run slower under a 64 bit operating system than a 32 bit operating system with mature drivers and programs optomized for the existing crop of

In the future I'll simply use 32bit systems for web frontends if my benchmarks confirm this trend. As an aside, have you measured a 32-bit ruby binary running on the 64-bit system? I recall you mentioned trying a 32-bit ruby in a chroot ... but what was puzzling me was why the chroot was needed?

Applications aside, I thought the Opteron could run either 32bit stuff or 64bit stuff natively. If this is so, then why does there need to be a software compatibility mode? The problem that I see (maybe I'm wrong) is that usually you can't have both a 32bit and 64bit driver running at the same time.

A 32 bit processor can add two 32-bit integers in one machine instruction and with 32-bit addresses it can access 4 GByte of memory. A 64 bit processor can add two 64-bit integers in one machine instruction and with 64-bit addresses it can access 4G*4G of memory. The machine instruction set is different,

... would like to know what is the exact difference between 32 and 64 bit binaries, do 64bitters run faster ? 64 bit means that the size of pointers is greater. If you can address requisite memory with smaller pointers, then you probably should. We see about a 2-3% performance penalty with 64bit vs n32bit applications.
