I recall you mentioned trying a 32-bit ruby in a chroot ... but what was puzzling me was why the chroot was needed? It isn't, but I have a chroot ready so it's easier for me to simply chroot into it when needing to run 32bit code. Few packages are available as 32bit on 64bit Gentoo : - binary-only packages,

Depending on the video files you'd like to decode 32bit can make a difference. Many of the stranger codecs are supported through the win32 codecs which are not 64bit safe or at least that's what I've read. I'd assume that qt, mp4, and wmv would generally be okay. and this 'strange' codecs are covered by mplayer-bin

One difference is that Apple's funny 32/64 bit hybrid technique isn't officially supported. Apple will need to move to a real 64-bit OS eventually, With "funny" being fully backwards compatible, making the transition to 64bit totally seamless, as opposed to in Windows, where there is no backwards compatibility.

Not entirely true; a 64 bit OS allows large file manipulations in 32 bit apps to be somewhat faster as the arithmetic is then native 64 bit.
